There Is Hope

In today's developing countries, about 2.5 million people are forced to rely on fuels such as wood, charcoal and animal dung to meet energy needs for cooking. In sub-Saharan Africa, for example, over 80 percent of people rely on these traditional fuels for cooking — as do over 50 percent of the populations of India and China.

Not only do use of these fuels increase carbon emissions, they are a major killer of families who rely upon them. Indoor air pollution causes 1.5 million deaths every year, which exceeds total deaths from malaria and rivals the number of deaths from tuberculosis.
