Tonic Trek: Vienna

Vienna was the seat of power in Central Europe for centuries, and fortunately that influence and power resulted in making the city itself a visual masterpiece. Here are some tips for a trip to the imperial city whose empire ended less than 100 years ago.

The entire city center is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, so it's easy to walk the streets and see one magnificent structure after the next. There are so many sights to see, however, that it truly makes sense to learn the metro and tram map. They are, thankfully, very tourist-friendly. In fact, I opted to stay in a hostel near the western train station (West Bahnhof) because it was simple and quick to take the metro to the city center. It's worth saving money by staying just outside the city center as long as you are right next to a metro stop. Just get out at the Stephansplatz stop and you'll be in the city's heart.

While there's lots to see simply wandering around, I suggest starting with a tram ride around the Ring Road, which replaced the old city walls that were torn down in the late 1800s. You'll definitely want to visit St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Hofburg and the Belvedere palaces, and if you love modern art, the Museum Quarter. For nightlife, most of the action seems to be near the Schottenring metro stop, where you will find the popular Flex club and the river beaches. There are also lots of pubs along Mariahilfer Strabe, a major boulevard just west of the center. For families who naturally bypass the nightlife, check out Prater Park for lots of outside fun including Vienna's famed Ferris Wheel.

Finally, here is my recommendation for all your foodies. Most importantly, you must try the authentic Viennese coffee. The city takes great pride in its reputation, so it's unimaginable that a Starbucks even exists there. On the food tip, Vienna makes incredible meat dishes, though they are most famous for their wiener schnitzel. Also check out their chicken and sausage dishes and dumplings.

Though the capital city is large, nearly all of the attractions are concentrated near the city center, and an excellent public transit system makes everything easily accessible. Staying in the city center is always desirable, but as long as you are near a metro stop, you should be golden.
