What's in a Name?
First we told you about Muff, the unfortunately named street in a New Zealand town. Now we bring you news of F—king, although the townspeople probably wish we wouldn't.
After all, the Austrian town's residents just want to be "left in peace," reports the Austrian Times. And please, leave the name signs alone — 15 have been stolen at last count. And if you have to pass through the town, which you probably don't, please don't be crude and stop to take pictures next to them.
"Just leave us alone," Mayor Franz Meindl told the Austrian Times. "We don't find it funny."
To Austrians, he said, the name is "just the usual spelling of the word. I’m sure I would find many town names in Britain or somewhere else which sound funny when they are pronounced in German."
According to the U.K.'s thelondonpaper, unlike Muff, the residents of F—king have no desire to change their town's name. The northwest Austrian town, which has about 100 residents, voted against the idea in 2004.
In a quote so famous it even ended up being cited by MSNBC's Keith Olbermann, then-mayor Siegfried Hauppl said in 2005: "We had a vote last year on whether to rename the town, but decided to keep it as it is. After all, F—king has existed for 800 years, probably when a Mr. F—k or the F—k family moved into the area. The 'ing' was added as a word for settlement."
Which apparently hasn't settled things a bit.
