Legend of the Falls — African Lunar Rainbows

Dressing as Tarzan might be fun for Halloween, but the real King of the Jungle action is in Victoria Falls. On the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe (yes, that Zimbabwe), Victoria Falls is one of the seven natural wonders of the world stretching a mile wide and nearly 400 feet high. Dropping as much as 10 million liters of water per second, the waterfall sends spray rocketing into the air like inverted rain that can be seen from 30 miles away. During a full moon, that same spray even creates the backdrop for breathtaking lunar rainbows. Tourist towns naturally developed on each side of the border — Livingstone in Zambia and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe — with enough heart-stopping thrills to bring Survivor back to Africa. Along the falls and Zambezi River, the towns offer the world's third largest Bungee jump, high-speed whitewater rafting, motorized hand-gliders and even "waterfall surfing," which is actually just taking a boogie board down the river currents. There's magnificent hiking and views in the adjacent national parks, and for those brave enough to conquer the misty footbridge to the Knife Edge, there's a bird's eye view of the 500-foot wide whirlpool known as the Boiling Pot. For the less daredevil-minded vacationer, there's canoeing, elephant-back safaris, African drum lessons and walking with lion cubs, though the latter sounds about as safe as swimming at a Peter Benchley water park. The Zimbabwe side offers a more complete view of the victoria_falls-thedevilsarmchairwaterfall, but most tourists prefer to stay in Livingstone since Zambia has a more stable government than what Robbie Mugabe's offering. While both sides offer riverfront hotels, Livingstone has an accessible island at the top of the falls where you can literally dangle your feet over the edge! It goes by the quaint name the Devil's Armchair. With the rainy season ending in late May, summer is the best time to see Victoria Falls in all its splendor and glory. From riding gliders past the falls to jet boating across whirlpools, Victoria Falls gives you everything you need, except maybe a Jane, to become a real-life Tarzan.
