Belvedere Straight Up!

The Belvedere (right) was just his summer house.

That's right, Prince Eugene of Savoy wanted a quiet summer place outside Vienna's city walls, and this is the humble, little abode he thought would do the trick. Royal-hating aside, though, he certainly left us one hell of structure, and it's now being put to good use.

Located south of the city center, the Belvedere palace features both an upper and a lower section that together house the permanent collection of the Austrian Gallery. Likewise, the Orangery and Stables host temporary exhibits as well as beautiful medieval tapestries. It should be noted, however, that the tapestries are generally on display from 10 a.m. to noon, so be warned all you sleepy heads that partied too hard at Flex the belvedre11night before. Of course, art or no art, it's worth visiting the Belvedere simply to admire the stunning palace and its breath-taking gardens and pool. It certainly makes your boss' summer house in the Hamptons look like a wood shed!

Also, for those willing to endure Europe in the winter, there is a spacious Christmas market that pops up just outside the Belvedere. While this Tonic Trekker will pass on winter in Vienna, he has no doubt the market offers many unique and original gifts. And if nothing else, send home some Viennese coffee for a taste of the world's best.
