What’s In A Name? Everything
Yesterday, the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, signed his name to a list supporting the Millennium Development Goals of ending world hunger, poverty, disease and illiteracy. The list is to help remind the governments that signed up to it that there is only another seven years to go. In addition to this effort, will.i.am, member of the Black Eyed Peas and well known producer, was also outside the United Nations to launch his new song in support called 'in my name'. He is one of many well known people supporting this campaign.
The main theme behind all this is that 'We can be the generation that ends poverty,' and with the Millennium Development Goals summit taking place in New York this week, the push is on to ensure that goals are achieved by September 2015. Currently 50,000 people per day die of basic poverty, hunger and disease. Organisations involved and supporting include: Oxfam, Save The Children, Comic Relief and the ONE Campaign. YouTube is also involved and promoting the will.i.am video and asking people to upload their own 'in my name' videos in support. If you are not doing anything this weekend why not get involved and upload a video. The other thing you can do is add your name to the online list which will be presented to world leaders reminding them of what they signed up for with the Millennium Development Goals. A simple thing to do to help others around the world.
