Are Stem Cells the New Botox?
Stevie Wonder, get ready to see all your gold records.
Gizmodo.com, a leader in blogging new gadgets and technology, has reported three patients having their sight restored in less than a month by using contact lenses refined with stem cells.
The subjects were each blind in one eye. After removing stem cells from their good eyes and growing them in contact lenses for a little over a week, they were given to the subjects. After two weeks of usage, the stem cells started repairing the cornea, restoring sight to the eye.
All three subjects were legally blind. Two can now read the big letters at the top of an eye test, and one's sight is now good enough to pass his driver's license exam. Talk about a life-changing month! What's more, these "super-contacts" are fiscally cheap and an easy procedure to perform; college kids (read: all college kids) who have poor eye-sight from all those late-nighters will soon be able to spot the nearest bar like a hawk chasing a mouse.
This great piece of news really lifted my mood and made me think how far we've come technologically — from simply dealing with our hindrances to correcting and perfecting them. When this procedure becomes mainstream, I can see everyone with poor sight using it to improve their flaws. I'm calling it now: the new Botox.
