Pink Cabs: Latest Weapon in Women's Lib

We've all heard of yellow cabs, but what about pink cabs -- hot pink cabs?

Sounds like they'd be easy to spot in a sea of cars, right? And indeed they would. But that still won't help those of the male persuasion get a lift.

The new fleet of 35 pink Chevy compact cabs in Mexico's city of Puebla are driven by women only and only pick up women, reports the Associated Press. Each taxi comes with a beauty kit, GPS system and an alarm to notify emergency services.

"Some of the women who have been on board tell us how male taxi drivers cross the line and try to flirt with them and make inappropriate propositions," taxi driver Aida Santos told the AP. "In the Pink Taxi they won't have that feeling of insecurity, and they feel more relaxed."

But one woman's girl power, is another woman's stereotype.

"We are in the 21st century, and they are saying women have continued worrying about beauty and nothing more," Vianeth Rojas, of the Network for Sexual and Reproductive Rights in Puebla told the AP. "They are absolutely not helping eradicate violence against women."

Pink Taxi de Puebla was started with a private investment of 5.8 million pesos (about $440,000) and was licensed by the local and state governments, which also provided training.

Be that as it may, the pink taxis allow Mexican women to test drive a profession previously dominated by men. Women-only taxis have also been introduced to Moscow and Dubai, among other cities.

We can't say we need ladies-only cabs in New York City, but how about some that offer spa treatments?
