Workout Bollywood-Style with Masala Bhangra
Spinning classes are so 2007 and not everyone is going to try yoga. In between, yet not middle of the road, is the super high energy Indian dance workout called masala bhangra. (If you've seen the sleeper hit of last year, Slumdog Millionaire, you've seen it. That's the number they're all doing at the end of the film.)
Masala, means 'spicy' in Hindi, explains the creator of the workout, Sarina Jain ("the Jane Fonda of India"), and Bhangra, is a traditional folk dance from the northern state of Punjab, India.
It's a full-on wrist-wringing, hip-shaking cardio workout with a lot of squats, and slides, jumps and turns all set to the uptempo beat of Bhangra.
If you're getting bored with your current gym, yoga. Pilates, walking, etc. routine, there's no better time than right now to spice up your regimen. Click here if you're in New York City for classes. Or, click here to check out Sarina Jain's DVDs
