Last Friday was World Environment Day, established in 1972 by the United Nations General Assembly in an effort to increase environmental awareness on a global scale. As part of a growing trend of eco-conscious business, some companies took the opportunity to do their part by getting employees involved.
Accenture, a global consulting firm, began its Eco Challenge, a three-month program where its employees are supposed to measure their carbon footprint and aim to reduce it.
Infosys Technologies, a global technology service provider, launched a polyethylene bag-free commitment for all its campuses around the world, as a means of reducing the consumption of plastics that aren't biodegradable. Polyethylene is used in plastic shopping bags, among other consumer products.
Anheuser-Busch, an American brewer, had more than 47 activities planned, including tree plantings, a community gardening project and employee tours of a new Bio-Energy Recovery System (BERS), which harnesses renewable energy from leftover brewery water.
