The One and Ono

Guess who topped last week's Hot Dance Club Play chart? Hmm, was it Beyoncé? Maybe that Pitbull fellow or those "Boom Boom Pow" kids? Nope, nope, no. It was Yoko Ono with "I'm Not Getting Enough"!While we won't ponder what she's not getting enough of, experimental pop's first lady is ready to give us the Plastic Ono Band's full-length debut, Between My Head and the Sky, coming Sept. 21. While "Enough" actually originates from her 2001 release Blueprint For a Sunrise, her new band recently released its debut single, "The Sun Is Down" (Cornelius Remix)," along with the "Don't Stop Me!" sampler EP featuring "Sun" and two other Sky tracks. June is clearly a blessed month for the 76-year-old Mrs. John Lennon. In addition to her chart success, she received lifetime achievement awards from both the MOJO Magazine Awards and Italy's art-centered Venice Biennale. And Sunday night, the Plastic Ono Band — featuring Keigo "Cornelius" Oyamada, Cibo Matto's Yuka Honda and her son Sean Lennon — makes its U.K. performance debut at London's Royal Albert Hall as part of a multi-act event.Speaking of her son, Sean produced Between My Head and the Sky at NYC's Sear Sound with contributors ranging from Japanese avant-pop artists to downtown-Manhattan musical improvisers. "Yoko unleashed a deluge of new songs, writing about 16 songs in six days," said the younger Lennon. "The most prolific day [peaked] out at six songs written and tracked in an afternoon. The recording session was like a tornado of inspiration. Some of the best lyrics on the record [came when] Yoko actually 'freestyled' as if she were a lyrical divining rod."It's easy to imagine that poppa must be proud.
