Zachary Bonner. Awesomest. Kid. Ever.

What were you doing when you were in fifth grade? Playing dodgeball? Eating Popsicles? Wishing for a snow day? Not Zachary Bonner. This 11-year-old Floridian is too busy being awesome. He’s busy raising awareness for homeless children by walking 1,225 miles from his home in Tampa to the White House. He began the final leg of his “My House to the White House” journey in Atlanta on May 11 and will conclude at the gates of “America’s House” on July 11. He has requested to meet with President Obama in D.C. and, as he makes his way north, is collecting donations and letters urging Obama to address youth homelessness. As you might have guessed, this ain’t Zach’s first rodeo. In 2005 — at the ripe, old age of 7 — he founded a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping underprivileged kids. It all started with Hurricane Charley, which hit Florida in 2004 and motivated Zach to use his wagon to collect what ended up amounting to 27 pickup loads of bottled water, food, and other supplies from his neighbors. After Hurricane Katrina hit the next year, his Little Red Wagon Foundation was born. And it’s been non-stop awesomeness ever since. Zach works in FEMA trailer parks in Louisiana, donating food and supplies and throwing holiday parties. He loads backpacks with things homeless kids might need — socks, Chef Boyardee, sewing kits — and distributes them around the country. And every year, he invites other kids to join him in spending 24 hours living as homeless to raise money and publicize what street kids face.Zach’s work has been duly celebrated: He received the Presidential Call to Service Award in 2006 and won Volvo's National Hometown Youth Hero Award last year, garnering him $25,000 to be donated to the charity of his choice. At the rate he’s going, there will be — and already has been — much more than that going to those who need it most. Follow Zach’s progress on the final leg of his journey on the Zach Tracker. The awesome-wagon might be swinging through your town some day soon.
