Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman’s career has been anything but traditional. In his decade in Hollywood, the Sydney, Australia native has done more than most actors manage in a career. His diverse resume includes gigs hosting award shows, starring roles in major action films, and voiceover work in animated features. So it makes sense that his charity work has been, to say the least, out of the ordinary.

Jackman made headlines in 2009 by donating Aus $100,000 (US $72,000) to charity via Twitter. He initiated a campaign where users of the social networking site could send him pitches – in 140 characters or less – explaining why their charity was most deserving of his donation. In the end, Jackman was unable to pick just one cause, so he cut two checks: one to Operation of Hope, a nonprofit that donates surgeries to children in developing countries born in need of facial surgeries, and another to Charity: Water, who help provide clean water supplies for developing nations.

Jackman’s choices of charities aimed on populations in developing nations are true to form. He has long been an advocate of microcredit – even restructuring a portion of his production company to act as a bank offering microloans to women in need. Jackman, named by People the 2008 Sexiest Man Alive, pals around with another, more prestigious, award winner: Bangladeshi economist Mohamad Yunus, a microcredit pioneer and recipient of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize.

World Peace, of course, is far from the mind of Jackman’s signature character Wolverine. Same goes for Daniel Craig’s brutal rendition James Bond. But the two paired up on Broadway recently to raise over US $1.5 million in six weeks for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS through donations surrounding their performance in critically acclaimed 2-man play A Steady Rain.

It’s hard to pin down Jackman’s charitable work. Other causes with which he has been heavily involved include the Global Poverty Project, the Worldwide Orphans Foundation, Hasbro’s Project Zambi (which offers services to orphaned children in Africa), and Family Health International.
