John Mayer

Part dreamy popstar, part indie rocker and part concerned citizen, John Mayer, regularly performs at benefit concerts and has made a few causes — notably environmentalism — his own. He set up an organization called Another Kind of Green, to promote his particular view of climate change. Mayer thinks we should be neither alarmist nor defeatist — do what you can to prevent waste, he says, but don't worry about the world ending tomorrow.

The singer also works with Habitat for Humanity, as well as giving money to lesser-known organizations, like those supporting mental health and a summer camp for the kids of military personnel. Another organization, named after one of his songs "Back to You," is a charity auction through which he raises money for various causes.

Originally from Connecticut, Mayer moved to Boston to attend Berklee College of Music as a singer and acoustic guitar player. Like many of the school's most famous students, Mayer dropped out, never finishing his degree. Instead, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where his performances gained a cult following. His 2003 album, Room for Squares, was a smash hit. He followed up with the also successful, Heavier Things. Nowadays Mayer entertains his fans both by touring and by regularly updating his Twitter page. Mayer also does stand-up comedy and writes for magazines like Esquire.
