Martin Scorsese

Martin Scorsese's films typically address themes such as guilt and redemption, machismo, and violence.  However, in real life, the film director, screenwriter, producer and actor focuses on health or homelessness-related charities and causes, such as Help USA, the Los Angeles Free Clinic, and the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Furthermore, in 2007, Scorsese helped launch NIAF's Jack Valenti Institute, which provides support to Italian American film students.

Help USA was formed by former federal Housing Secretary Andrew Cuomo to aid the homeless and victims of domestic abuse. The organization honored Scorsese at its 2006 Tribute Awards Dinner, along with musician Jon Bon Jovi, for his consistent efforts that offer assistance, mentorship and support to the organization. Scorsese has been known to assist the non-profit group with its annual fund-raising, often by donating items for charity auctions.  Scorsese's support of the LA Free Clinic – which provides free health care services for residents in LA County – has involved the director's participation in fund-raising galas, including one in 2006 that raised over $4 million for the clinic

Similarly, Scorsese often makes appearances at fund-raising events for the Michael J. Fox Foundation, including participating in a 2008 gala that raised over $4.4 million for the charity. Over 850 guests attended the event, including Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore, Derek Jeter, Rachael Ray, Elizabeth Berkley and Mayor of Newark Cory A. Booker. It can be assumed that Scorsese's support frequently helps in bringing out other celebrities to events, as his long history in Hollywood has given him the opportunity to work with many people in the industry.

Widely considered to be one of the most significant and influential American filmmakers of his era, Scorsese's best work may actually be in the support he gives to his favorite charities.
