Michelle Obama

She’s an Ivy League-educated attorney, she’s married to the most powerful man in the world, and she has arms that make men swoon and women jealous. Michelle Obama has it all and she's committed to giving some back — using her high-profile position to advocate for issues affecting Americans and the world at large.

The 44th First Lady has rolled up her sleeves since she arrived at the White House, volunteering at food kitchens in the Washington DC area like Miriam's Kitchen. After Hurricane Dolly, she volunteered with YouthBuild USA, helping construct an affordable, energy-efficient home for a family whose residence was destroyed by the storm. She put the finishing touches on a playground in San Francisco, built entirely by volunteers. Closer to home, she launched a program in which female White House staffers act as mentors to high school girls. Obama's leadership has encouraged several Americans — including other government spouses — to get more involved in community service.

Obama is a strong advocate for the importance of volunteerism among all Americans. She encourages communities to band together to improve neighborhoods and schools, rather than relying on government help alone. In 2009 she announced Mission Serve, an initiative through which members of the military can participate in community service. The same year, she was the keynote speaker the Greater DC Cares Business and Nonprofit Philanthropy Summit and Awards, as well as at the National Conference on Volunteering and Service.

The service endeavor that Obama is perhaps most passionate about is her effort to change the eating habits of America's youth. She created a White House garden, complete with all sorts of fruits, vegetables and herbs and invited youngsters to help her plant. The same group of kids later pitched in to harvest the crops.
