Roger Moore is for the birds — literally. The former “James Bond” has for years been a vocal activist on behalf of ducks and geese used in the production of foie gras. Even though his native UK has banned production of the delicacy (which involves cruelly force-feeding the animals to enlarge their livers), foie gras is still for sale in England.
Moore is now joining with PETA to call on grocer Fortnum & Mason to stop selling foie gras. Over the holidays, he was featured in an ad in the London Underground that read, “Force-Feeding Birds Is Cruel, Not Yule.”
Show your support by watching PETA’s foie gras exposé, narrated by Kate Winslet, and signing this Change.org petition to stop the sale of foie gras at Fortnum & Mason.
While Moore focuses on that, another high-profile opponent of foie gras has set her sights on a new target.
Joanna Lumley, who will forever be a Bond girl despite having just a minor role in 1969′s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, is campaigning for the fair treatment of horses who lead carriages in New York City.
Better known for the ’90s cult series Absolutely Fabulous, Lumley is hoping to use her celebrity to end the practice here in the US. (It’s already banned in London and Paris.)
She recently told PETA, “People have an old romantic notion about it. I would just say, ‘Please think again — think of the freezing and boiling weather they are forced to work in, and think of the cramped city stables where the horses are kept.’”
Carriage horses face exhaustion, pollution and hoof deterioration. As Change.org’s Animals blog reported, a horse pulling a carriage was even grazed by a city bus in November.
To voice your support, sign the petition at Change.org urging the New York City Council to ban horse-drawn carriages.
