Comedian Bryan Lacey has made boosting the self-confidence of strangers his full time job. Since Nov. 1, he’s been walking the streets of London on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., passing out verbal compliments.
He’s been heard saying things like, “What a beautiful name you have. It must be ancient Latin for gorgeous and adorable.” Or, “Hello, I’m from the department of beauty crimes and we’re on the look-out for the most beautiful person on the planet. I think you should know that you are our prime suspect.”
QVC did a survey revealing that 41 percent of women in the UK claim a compliment has not come their way in a year! In conjunction with the launch of the QVC Beauty Channel, the company decided to launch The World’s Biggest Compliment campaign. Lacey was chosen to be the home shopping network’s, “Complimentor,” or “ambassador of happiness,” as to which he has also been referred.
The goal is to give 100,000 compliments in two weeks, in an effort to improve the disconcerting statistic and break a Guinness World record.
In an interview with QVC, Lacey was asked how he got involved with the campaign. He responded, “When the QVC Beauty Channel was looking for somebody to help launch it they Googled ‘beautiful’ and obviously my picture and details came up … the rest is history.”
He then gave his more serious answer, “It’s a great idea to get people feeling good about themselves and revive the art of complimenting — the world would be a better place if we were all a bit nicer to each other.”
If you’re in the London area, definitely keep your eye out for a nice guy holding a “Free Compliments” sign. If you live anywhere else and could use a pick-me-up, find out how you can receive a sweet compliment via email.
