Comeback, shmumback … Britney made one, the jury’s out on Lindsay Lohan’s return to the spotlight, but can we give Amy Winehouse a round of applause for making it to 2009?
Seriously. Here she is looking fit and healthy — if a bit upset, but you would be too if you were coming home for the first time in six months to walk straight into a courtroom to face assault charges.
She gave fans quite the scare over the last couple of years since her phenomenal U.S. debut in early 2007 with Back to Black her Grammy-winning album that spawned the hit single “Rehab.”
The song was on everyone’s lips at the time of the height of the cavalcade of trainwrecks — with Britney, Lindsay and Paris all careening on a crash course to something far worse than irrelevance: possible death! Winehouse’s songs started to become hauntingly real as the 25-year-old songstress with the voice of a boozy ’40s jazz singer became increasingly more and more despondent and addicted to a variety of drugs.
There was the hanging with Pete Doherty, which led to the inevitable canceled tour dates, rescheduled appearances, drug photos and delayed studio recording on a highly anticipated third effort.
She was starting to make Janis Joplin look like Mother Teresa, topping antic over antic. Despite the fact that she’s back in the United Kingdom and, I’m sure, with family and friends who are supportive, its very clear that Miss Winehouse — who has dumped a husband, hard drugs and that once brilliant beehive — is working slowly towards a comeback.
We can’t wait!
