Angelina Jolie Visits Flood Victims in Pakistan
Academy Award-winning actress, mother of six and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (Try putting that on a name tag!) Angelina Jolie visited Pakistan this week to draw attention to the floods that have ravaged the country. In the midst of meeting with reporters, Jolie condemned the Florida church that is planning to burn copies of the Quran to commemorate the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
“I have hardly the words that somebody would do that to somebody’s religious book,” Jolie told reporters in Islamabad after visiting refugee camps in the northwestern part of the country, according to the Associated Press.
Pastor Terry Jones of the Dove World Outreach Center, a small, anti-Islam, evangelical Christian church in Gainesville, Fla. is organizing the book burning. Jones has said repeatedly that he and his congregation intend to move forward with their plans despite warnings from US government officials, who have called the Quran burning a “disgraceful act” that could endanger US troops in the Middle East and around the world.
The UN hopes Jolie’s visit will bring attention and subsequent funds to the country. Only $294 million of the $460 million in emergency funds requested by the UN has been received so far.
Tyra Banks Talks Self-Esteem While We Eat Bacon
So the Anti-Gossip got to have breakfast with Tyra Banks and Andre Leon Talley this morning to celebrate the 15th cycle of America’s Next Top Model.
As we devoured an entire platter of bacon, we asked Banks in between bites how she thinks Top Model has helped to improve women and girls’ self-esteem.
“I am attracted to beauty that is odd. I created Top Model to expand the definition of beauty. We have always chosen some girls who are odd-looking and interesting and different, and this season we did that with all of them,” Banks said. “I feel like when I am telling a girl on Top Model that she is beautiful whether her ears are sticking out, and she is alabaster colored and they call her ghost. When I tell her she is beautiful on the show, I am using her to talk to the girl who is sitting home and feeling insecure about herself. The model is a portal. It’s not a perfect recipe, but it is a recipe I use to get to the girls.”
Love that! Also loved Talley’s approval of our mass consumption of pork product. Our self-esteem is in top shape today.
