It looks like Mrs. Smith is going to Washington.
Angelina Jolie and the U.N. Refugee Agency have teamed up to film a PSA for World Refugee Day on June 20. In the 31-second clip, Jolie pleads, “Please don’t turn away. Refugees are the most vulnerable people on earth. Every day, they are fighting to survive. They deserve our respect.”
According to the UNHCR, approximately 42 million people have been uprooted around the world and lack the basic essentials of life, such as food, clean water, sanitation and protection from violence.
In a statement about World Refugee Day, the UNHCR writes, “This year, with the world economic crisis threatening to slash aid budgets and amid enormous global uncertainty, we need to ensure refugees are not forgotten.” That’s why the theme for this year’s World Refugee Day on June 20 is “Real People, Real Needs.”
Says Jolie on the organization’s website, “Please support refugees and the UNHCR.”
Adds U.N. High Commissioner António Guterres, “Helping [refugees] to rebuild their lives and their communities benefits us all.”
