“If we are to end the cycle of human devastation triggered by the AIDS epidemic, we must address the rights of women and girls and challenge their second class citizen status, which puts them at greater risk of HIV.” — Annie Lennox
With a long-standing career as an artist, Annie Lennox is no stranger to hard work, and she takes that level of dedication outside the recording studio, as well. The singer is a tireless advocate for women’s rights, social justice and bringing support and awareness to the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa. Close to her heart are women and children suffering from the disease.
There are not enough health services for women, leaving them vulnerable to death. Women are often left without proper education about the disease, or guidance and support on ways to prevent it. “The daily brutality faced by millions of women and girls is unacceptable,” Lennox told UNAIDS.
Lennox has been advocating for women and children affected by HIV/AIDS for many years now. In 2007, she launched her SING campaign to raise awareness for the pandemic, which Nelson Mandela described as genocide. It was in promotion of SING that the singer caused an uproar when she wore an HIV Positive shirt on April’s Idol Gives Back, in order to raise awareness for the campaign.
“How can anyone not be moved by Annie Lennox and her voice? I am sure with her incredible passion and presence, she will raise awareness of the terrible toll HIV has taken on women and girls,” said UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé, “With her amazing energy, she will make sure international, national and community leaders challenge the injustice of gender inequality.”
