Calling All Beatrix Potter Fans

Ladies and gentlemen with a spare $1.25 million along with an obsession with Beatrix Potter, please form an orderly line here: The Peter Rabbit creator’s favorite Scottish fishing retreat — which inspired her to write The Tale of Mr Jeremy Fisher and Mrs. Tiggywinkle — is up for sale. The price is a cool £760,000 ($1.25 million.) for a three-bedroom cottage, 1 1/4 miles of river (which produces an average annual catch of about 113 salmon), and two islands that form a wildlife habitat. (View the property listing here.)

For 11 years from 1871 onwards, Potter spent her summer vacations at the Scottish spot, known as the Dalguise Fishings. The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher was first published in 1906. It tells of the adventures of a frog as he tries to catch his dinner. Potter published 22 books, beginning in 1902 with the Tales of Peter Rabbit.

This is the second bit of British literary lore up for sale this week. Earlier, the lighthouse that inspired Virginia Woolf’s most famous novel sold for £80,000 ($130,989) — practically a bargain compared to the Potter land.
