No “Miner Feat.” It Took the World

It took weeks of hard work, persistence and faith to rescue 33 Chilean miners. The Chilean government, the miners themselves, their families and several countries lent their assistance throughout the process. Yesterday, all 33 men were freed from the mine that collapsed on Aug. 5, and were finally reunited with their loved ones.

The whole world watched the story unfold, cheering them through the finish line until the last man emerged late last night. For once, the story was powerful not for its tragic sorrows, but for the  inspiration it brought to all who witnessed their relentless rescue efforts.

One by one, the miners came up from beneath the earth each hugging their wives, mothers, brothers, sons and daughters, so happy and grateful to be alive. The operation was a huge success, and the men had been in good spirits the whole way through.

What can we learn from this successful rescue? Last night on ABC, Diane Sawyer interviewed the Chilean President Sebastian Pinera, applauding him for the way he managed the crisis, and he shared two pointers: Start using all of your energy and resources right off the bat and never give up.
