Chowing Down Caveman-Style

Unless your name’s Bruce Wayne, I bet you’ve never had dinner in a cave before.

That’s the experience offered by the Triton Restaurant in the heart of Prague’s Wenceslas Square. Located beneath the Adria Hotel, the restaurant offers mostly traditional Czech cuisine in an opulent Art Noveau stalactite cave. Sure, it sounds like a gimmick, but the gimmick must be working because Triton is just three years shy of its centennial anniversary. That’s right, this place opened when William Taft was the American president.

While it’s the stalactites that give the cave its real wow factor, the interior does boast other strong design elements. There’s a large tropical fish tank to provide a wider color palate, and there are Greek mythology statutes that tell the story of Eurydice and Orpheus. Triton is definitely a more refined restaurant aimed at adults, but certainly it will keep the kids entertained better than most places.

Unfortunately, like most restaurants in Prague, the food does not rise above average, and in some cases the cuisine is just plain bizarre. To experience a variety of local flavors, I actually ordered the multi-course tasting menu. What still confuses me is why they put whipped cream on my steak and sour cream on my apple pie. Only South Park grubber Eric Cartman likes those types of things.

Now that said, Triton does have special menus that at least offer more alternatives from the regular restaurant experience. For example, they will offer the Game Menu in October and the Flower Menu in May to coincide with Mother’s Day. And while they offer another menu for Valentine’s, the restaurant makes the Candlelight Menu available all year long for those who want the ultimate in romantic dining.

Really, who thought eating like a caveman could ever be romantic?
