Conan O’Brien: The Squeakquel

Conan O’Brien has resurfaced for the first time after he gracefully — and hilariously — signed off from The Tonight Show on Jan. 22. With a single post to his new Twitter account, he jokingly admits that he’s not exactly surrounded by the A-list talent he once was.

“Today I interviewed a squirrel in my backyard and then threw to commercial,” O’Brien tweeted. “Somebody help me.”

Clearly O’Brien’s still got it — and thousands of fans agree. His virgin tweet was enough to garner nearly 275,000 fans in 19 hours with thousands more expected to sign up soon.

Without the network breathing down his neck, it appears O’Brien has loosened his collar a bit — so much so that his Twitter pic features a monkey draped around his neck, and he’s grown in a rather handsome-looking beard, too.

His brief Twitter bio? In remarkably few words, he manages to sum up where his career is now: “I had a show. Then I had a different show. Now I have a Twitter account.”

In January, O’Brien respectfully cried uncle from NBC, and in his refusal to slink back to an after-midnight time slot, giving Jay Leno his old home at 11:35 p.m., he proved that he’s a guy who like to do things his way. Throughout the entire ordeal, O’Brien managed to keep his dignity and humor intact — much to the delight of the Team Coco movement.

So what’s O’Brien’s next move? Nobody knows for sure. But based on his humorous first tweet, we can’t wait to find out.
