Fans who go to tonight’s Dallas Mavericks game against the San Antonio Spurs will likely see a hotly contested game with playoff seeding ramifications. The Mavs are currently the two seed, but could fall to three if they lose and the Utah Jazz win, while the Spurs are currently the seventh seed, but could move up to sixth with a win and a Portland loss. During halftime of this very important game, fans will also be treated to their team recognizing some of the more important members of the North Texas community.
According to a team release, Mavericks’ owner Mark Cuban, along with members from The UPS Store, will award the 10 winners of the Mavs/The UPS Store Teacher Recognition Program. Students from across North Texas, grades K-12, had the opportunity to nominate their teacher for this award, and had to write a 150-word essay explaining why their teacher deserved the honor. The nomination period ran from February 1 to March 19.
The 10 teachers, who came from high schools, middle schools and elementary schools from across the Metroplex, will each receive $1,000 for themselves as well as $1,000 for their school. And, of course, they also got tickets to the game, so they can be honored at halftime in person and, ideally, see the Mavericks win.
Win or lose tonight, it’s good to know the team’s owner gets it. As Cuban was quoted, “Teachers have the most important jobs in America — preparing our kids for the future.”
