Dog Bites Off Big Toe — Saves Owner’s Life

missing-big-toe.jpgJerry Douthett, 48, a musician living in Rockford, Mich. with his wife and their Jack Russell terrier Kiko, had an infected big toe that he refused to get checked out.

A few weeks ago Douthett drank a few too many margaritas and passed out. When he woke up his foot was covered in blood and his big toe was gone. Kilo bit off Douthett’s smelly, infected toe while he was sleeping.

Douthett’s wife, Rosee, said, “Maybe he thought it was not part of Jerry’s body, that it was a dead animal laying on the bed. But he chewed off the infected part so he knew when to stop, which was great.”

The rest of the toe was amputated by doctors, and while he was in the hospital he also found out that he has type 2 diabetes. It was a blessing in disguise that his intuitive pup knew that the toe was in critical condition. Jerry considered putting his dog down out of fear of his aggressive behavior, but changed his mind once he realized his dog may have saved his life.
