Jem, a dynamic 23-year old living in the United Kingdom, recently learned about the New Jersey-based A.N.G.E.L. Initiative and its work with Care Plus Foundation to eliminate the stigma for mental health. She was so inspired by their efforts that she decided to do her part by holding a 12-hour drum-a-thon and to draw pictures to raise money for the cause.
“I wanted to do something a little out of the ordinary, so I took two things I love to do and decided to put them to good use,” said Jem. “I have a dress down day at work authorized for August, so that will raise a bit more. I plan to incorporate a cake sale into that day and a raffle, as well.”
Jem received lots of moral support from her sister, which kept her going for the 12 hours when her energy lagged. She also had great support through her work friends. She publicized her efforts on Facebook and established a fundraising page through www.FirstGiving.com. Mylesbianradio.com also helped get the word out.
When asked what inspired her most to do this project, Jem talked about the important work Jamisin Manganelli is doing as founder of A.N.G.E.L. Initiative. Jamisin founded A.N.G.E.L. Initiative to help those dealing with their own thoughts of suicide and those struggling to live with someone who suffers from mental illness. The organization is also designed to educate and address the fear and ignorance stemming from not understanding the truth about mental illness.
Care Plus Foundation partners regularly with A.N.G.E.L. Initiative to bring important programming to the community on mental health related issues. After learning about Care Plus Foundation from Jamisin, Jem decided to donate the proceeds of her fundraising efforts to help the Foundation continue its mission of decreasing the stigma for mental health.
“I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for the work you do in the community and for people everywhere,” writes Jem to Care Plus Foundation. “Stigma relating to mental health is something we ALL need to eradicate all over the world. I think you are doing a blinding job in helping that issue and to let you know that your work is never unnoticed.”
