Eat Pie, Feel Good and Change the World

__valerie_cookie_academy.jpgThe best part of Thanksgiving (besides giving thanks) is the excessive amount of delicious food you get to eat especially the pie.  However, when you’re cooking an entire T-day dinner, getting a little help with the sides and dessert is often necessary. If you’re going to be opting for a pre-made pie, why not choose one that’s helping the world?

The Lower Eastside Girls Club of Manhattan is making homemade pies this Thanksgiving season to help out Red Hook Farm whose crops were ruined by a freak hailstorm this year.

Adriana Pezzulli Newman, director of development for the club says, “[We are] pleased to be supporting our partners in the food justice movement, Added Value and their youth farm in Brooklyn, through this Thanksgiving pie drive.”

The girls are dishing up three different pies made with locally-sourced, organic ingredients. Their mouthwateringly delicious menu includes pumpkin and apple pies ($20 each or two for $35). They also have pumpkin whoopee pies, “a generous dollop of tangy-sweet cream cheese filling sandwiched between two soft cake cookies made with local organic pumpkin.” Yum!

The Lower Eastside Girls Club is a community for girls aged 8-23 to develop their social and academic skills. Newman, says, “By delivering strong arts, literacy, science, health and leadership programs we provide girls with the vision to plan-and the tools to build-their future. All Girls Club programs develop environmental, entrepreneurial and ethical leadership in the girls we serve.”

Eating pie for a good cause is a sure-fire way to indulge in a Thanksgiving caloric overload guilt-free. Well, maybe not guilt-free, but less guilt for sure.

For all you New Yorkers, order your pie online now and pick it up, Nov. 22-24. The Lower Eastside Girls Club, 56 E. 1st St., b/t First & Second Aves., 212-982-1633
