Refreshing Pop Challenge
The Pepsi Refresh Project is awarding over $20 million in charitable grants to benefit the community. While anyone can enter an idea to receive philanthropic funding, pop-up Pepsi Refresh Project Cafes have brought celebs out to participate in activities to benefit their favorite charities. The last few days in LA a café was set up where stars decorated eggs to be auctioned off to the charity of their choice. Former American Idol contestant Katharine McPhee spent the morning of her 26th birthday painting eggs instead at a lavish breakfast eating them to support Feeding America. Teri Hatcher came in with her own set of DEGGsperate Housewives of Wisteria Lane eggs that she painted with her daughter the night before. An onlooker at the café told Tonic, “It had all the characters in it. She was so sweet and added the finishing touches to the eggs at the café,” adding, “Marcia Cross came by later in the day and gushed over Teri’s egg creation of her character on the show. She loved it and took a picture of it on her blackberry.” Jill Beraud, CMO and President of joint ventures, PepsiCo Beverages Americas said, “The Pepsi Refresh Project was developed with the belief that great ideas can come from anyone, anywhere, anytime.”
Ellen Gets Animated
Drawing on her life story, Ellen DeGeneres has become the latest profile subject of Bluewater Productions Female Force biography comic series. The comic book begins with Ellen’s childhood in Louisiana and follows her through the stepping stones of her life that eventually led to a sitcom, an Emmy, a talk show and support for several great causes. As a thanks for her cooperation on the endeavor, Bluewater Productions is donating a percentage of the proceeds to Ellen’s favorite charity: the Humane Society. The comic, which goes on sale for $3.99 March 31 can be purchased wherever comic books are sold or on amazon.com.
Previous subjects in the comic book biography series have included successful women like Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin, Oprah Winfrey, Stephenie Meyer, JK Rowling and Barbara Walters.
Cute Couple of the Day
A fellow wrestling fan told Tonic they spotted former American Idol Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson “looking slim and beautiful backstage with David Jr.” during Wrestlemania 26 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., Mar. 28. While American Idol winner Fantasia Barino was there to perform, Jennifer was there supporting her lawyer-turned-wresting personality David Otunga. Although there’s been no word on a wedding date, the couple have been engaged since September 2008 and had their son in August 2009. David once told me they keep their relationship strong staying active together and that he bought Jennifer a basketball for Christmas “because that’s what he asked for.” He also said, “Sometimes I let her win.”
