You know the old saying about how there is safety in numbers? Well, a group of five female college students in Maine showed there is power in numbers, too, when they foiled a violent attack by a 45-year-old man with a knife.
The women tackled Horst Wolk this week after they saw him slashing a 34-year-old nursing student with a knife in a parking lot at Husson University in Bangor, Maine, according to aol.com. Jesse Hladik, 21, who had just taken a self defense course, seized the knife, while the other four women forced the man to the ground and held him there until police arrived.
“It was really scary, but I’m glad we got involved,” Heather Mann told the AP reporter. “Because I really think he would have killed her.”
The woman was treated at a local hospital for wounds and released. She had a restraining order against Wolk. He was charged with attempted murder, elevated aggravated assault, aggravated assault and violation of a restraining order.
And the band of sisters? Bangor police gave the verbal equivalent of a fist pump to the heroic group.
“We would never recommend getting involved to the point where you might get hurt yourself and become a second victim,” said Bangor Police Sgt. Paul Edwards. “But am I proud of what they did? Of course I am. Am I glad they did it? Yeah. I’m happy because the outcome was good.”
