Former Soldier Determined to Make His Country Safer

Leader of the nonprofit Cambodian Self Help Demining and CNN Hero Aki Ra is on a mission to make his country safer by clearing dangerous land mines throughout the villages. Ra felt personally responsible for the land mines because he was forced by the Khmer Rouge to plant thousands of them when he was 10 years old.

After the war ended, he decided to disarm mines using self-made tools. Now Ra works with a full team of people who are helping him reduce the number of land mines that still bring fear to villagers. So far, his organization has cleared more than 50,000 land mines.
