Gap Logo Goes Back to the Original

gap_before_after.pngYes, that’s much better. We were slightly worried there for a hot minute and hoped the drugs the design team mistakenly took would wear off quickly. Well, they have; and we’re happy to welcome back the clothing company we have grown to love, logo included.

Last week, Gap unexpectedly changed up their iconic logo, which they’ve had for more than 20 years, by quietly slipping a newer, sleeker and more modern-looking logo (second photo to the right) onto their website, thinking it wouldn’t be a big deal. Yes, that’s exactly what every wife says to her husband’s 20-something mistress! Boy, were they wrong.

Most fans were very displeased and not shy about letting the company know on their Facebook page. Gap representatives quickly responded with a new crowd-sourcing project, asking people to send in their logo ideas. Not many jumped on that bandwagon, so Gap did what they had to do. Late last night on Facebook, they posted a message saying, “We’ve heard loud and clear that you don’t like the new logo. We’ve learned a lot from the feedback. We only want what’s best for the brand and our customers. So instead of crowd sourcing, we’re bringing back the Blue Box tonight.”

In the press release, Marka Hansen, president of Gap Brand North America, confessed that they didn’t go about it in the right way and if they ever evolve their logo in the future, they will do it much differently. In the meantime, they can learn from their mistakes.

What ever happened to those awesome, celebrity-filled Gap commercials? Hopefully as a big, fat “sorry” we’ll be seeing more of them … wishful thinking, we know. But for now, check these classic ones featuring Madonna, Missy Elliot, Claire Danes, Sarah Jessica Parker and Shannyn Sossamon.
