Amazingly, Paul has pulled off an undefeated World Cup. The octopus oracle picked Germany to win Saturday’s 3rd place match and, in a live TV broadcast seen across Europe on Friday, he chose Spain, which just collected its first World Cup title. Congratulations to Spain and, of course, to Paul!
We at Tonic have given you a software solution for removing the blaring of the vuvuzela, the story of a man watching the tournament from inside a giant soccer ball and a lingerie model all set to take to the streets in her birthday suit should Paraguay win it all. Therefore, I would be remiss if I didn’t notify you of the octopus in Germany that’s got a genuine knack for picking winners.
The “marvelous mollusk,” as The Huffington Post refers to him, is named Paul and he resides in a tank at the Sea Life Aquarium in Oberhausen. Since the beginning of the World Cup, two boxes have been placed within the tank, one with a German flag and the other with the flag of Germany’s opponent, and each container has food inside, so whichever box Paul goes for is said to be the team he’s picking.
This psychic cephalopod has so far picked all four German matches correctly, and to show he’s by no means biased, he picked Serbia over Germany (a match Serbia won 1-0). In fact, Paul happens to be from the UK and managed to restrain himself from picking England, instead favoring Germany in their most recent match. And now, for today’s match between the Germans and Diego Maradona‘s Argentinian squad, Paul is once again picking Germany. Will he maintain his perfect mark? Tune in at 10 a.m. EST to find out.
