Good Job Ecuador, Galapagos Off Endangered List

Blue Footed Boobie, GalapagosSince 1978, Ecuador‘s Galapagos Islands have been listed as one of The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) World Heritage sites. The archipelago of 13 islands is known for its abundant plant and animal life. But the gorgeous surroundings and lively habitation are the very reasons it became one of UNESCO’s World Heritage in Danger locations in 2007.

To be endangered by UNESCO’s standards means that a cultural or natural heritage site is at imminent risk of destruction. The beautiful Galapagos Islands draw a lot of visitors, who, unfortunately, have not been so careful with the islands over the years. Once tourism overran the area and when invasive species moved in, it was clear the islands needed more protection.

Thanks to the action of the Ecuadorian government, the islands were honored with a place off of the endangered list on Wednesday at the World Heritage Committee annual meeting being held in Brazil.

The conservation and protection movements by the government paid off, and the country’s capital, Quito, is trusted with the ability to maintain the Galapagos’ preservation.

According to AFP, Brazilian Heritage Institute president Luiz Fernando de Almeida said in a statement, ”It’s important to recognize the Ecuadoran government’s effort in protecting and preserving this heritage site.”

Darwin would be proud, Ecuador!
