With many people having economic difficulties and charities finding themselves especially strapped for cash, it’s nice to hear about for-profit companies doing their part to help out. This holiday season, that includes Google.
Normally around this time, those customers who spend a fair amount of money on AdSense or AdWords would get some cool swag from Google as a thank you for using their products. As much as everyone loves swag, it’s not exactly the most meaningful gift in the world. This year, according to TechCrunch, Google looks to be doing something a little different.
The company sent an e-mail to every single customer who uses either AdSense or AdWords, directing them to this page. The page says that Google is giving $20 million to a number of charities (which they list) “[b]ecause charities are experiencing their toughest year in decades.” There are currently 25 recipients listed, including Feeding America, Prajwala, Reporters Without Borders and the Tzu Chi Foundation.
According to TechCrunch, “It’s not entirely clear if this gift will fully replace the Google swag that they have sent out the past several years.” As someone who’s gotten swag from companies I’ve worked for in the past, as much as I appreciate getting those gifts, I think charities will appreciate this gift from Google much, much more.
