Hamptoning for the Fourth?

The Hamptons — the picturesque set of summer communities a couple hours’ drive from New York — is well-known for being the weekend playground of the rich, famous, and powerful. And it is indeed a fabulous place to spend this holiday weekend, particularly if you’re lucky enough to have a friend to stay with. If you make it out there, you can cap off your trip with something that’s much more grounding than eating $30 lobster sandwiches and looking at Hermes bags on the beach: meeting a former runaway that’s turned his life into an inspiring success story as an acclaimed chef.

On Sunday afternoon, chef Michael Mosolino, one of the Hamptons’ top caterers, will be reading from his memoir, Come, My Darling, Come, at Beach Read Books in Bridgehampton Commons. (If you’re a Hamptons novice, this is the big mall with the Kmart filled with Chanel-clad shoppers.) The book is a painful, honest, but ultimately uplifting story of a man that overcame obstacles like a rough-and-tumble childhood to become a popular chef in one of America’s most discerning communities. The book’s core message is that belief in yourself and conviction that you’ll succeed are more powerful than any knocks life throws at you.

Mosolino will be signing copies of the book at Sunday’s event, which runs from 12 to 2 p.m. … early enough to stop by, grab a quick swim, and still beat the traffic back to the city … even if you stop on the way home for a $30 lobster sandwich.
