Spicy Food and Bollywood Dancing for President Obama in India

obamainindia.jpgIndians have taken to the streets en mass hoping to catch a glimpse of President Obama‘s motorcade. Just days following the proverbial pounding the Democratic Party took in the mid-term elections, we’re sure the President appreciates the huge, loving welcome India has given him. From dancing with inner-city students to dining on spicy Indian biryani, America’s first couple is embracing (and seemingly loving) the culture of India.

In spite of the intense protection measures (it’s reported that 5,000 security personnel are in tow), Indians are thrilled and honored to have such an important leader spending time in their country. Minal Chudasama, a 12-year-old girl from Mumbai, told the Global Post, “It’s a great honor for our country that a president of the United States is coming. I want to be a big person like him.” She hopes to study in the US when she grows up and then return to India and help her country.

During one of the most heart-warming moments of the trip, President Obama and First Lady Michelle, joined students in dance at Holy Names High School. According to the Wall Street Journal, “When the kids beckoned, Mrs. Obama jumped up to join. The President resisted. His wife did a remarkable job keeping up with the kids. Then Mr. Obama gave in, did some not-terribly graceful shuffling then threw in the towel and gathered the kids around for photos. It’s great film.”

The Economic Times reports that the Obama’s have thoroughly enjoyed Indian gastronomy, too. An employee of Mumbai’s illustrious Taj Mahal Hotel reported, ”Mrs Obama complimented the chefs for their excellent food as she passed the lobby this morning. They enjoyed everything that was being served. And they seemed fine with our spicy food.” The President and his Mrs. dined on kathi kebabs, dosas, biryani, and the Taj Hotel’s renowned Bambaiyya-style batata vada.

Obviously, the trip it isn’t just all about fun and games. President Obama has signed six agreements with India, many of which focus on an increase of business and trade between the two countries. One of the most notable outcomes of Obama’s India trip is his endorsement of India as a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council.

It’s great to see the President and First Lady combine business with pleasure and fully immerse themselves in Indian traditions. Check out the video clip below of this power duo tearing up the dance floor. Gobamas!
