Joaquin Phoenix Makes an Exotic Appeal

“Animal rights is a part of my everyday life. When you live by example, you create a certain level of awareness. Friends of mine-people I have never discussed animal rights or vegetarianism with-are adopting vegetarian habits because they see it.” –Joaquin Phoenix

Natural instincts: Advocating for animal rights is nothing new for Joaquin Phoenix. The Oscar-winning actor has been a practicing vegan since age 3. He’s lent his clean-shaven face to Peta’s efforts before (to save the turkeys at Thanksgiving), but this time it’s not about eating animals — Phoenix is asking you not to wear animal skins, specifically alligator, crocodile and snake. The ugly truth: In the video (warning: this video is extremely graphic and upsetting) he says, “Did you know that mother snakes keep their eggs warm by wrapping their bodies around the eggs and then shivering to generate heat? Exotic animals are mostly unknown to us, and so is what they suffer before being turned into belts and bags?” Phoenix reminds us that because we’re far-removed from exotic animals we don’t see inhumane treatment, but that doesn’t mean it’s not happening. Purchasing power: The Walk the Line star penned letters to designers including Jimmy Choo and Christian Louboutin explaining the horrors behind the materials they use to make bags and shoes. He also sent the gruesome video appealing for the support of leading ladies such as Sarah Jessica-Parker, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jessica Simpson and Victoria Beckham — all notorious fashiositas who would never shy away from say, an alligator Hermes? Phoenix and Peta hope these influential trendsetters might change their ways and in turn, lead thousands to give up skins too.

Double Takes:

  • Take the Pledge to Shed Exotic Skins from your Wardrobe.
  • Shop on Peta or support skin-free brands such as Nike, H&M, Cole Haan, Overstock and Mooshoes.
  • Get the facts and find out where to take action.
