Last year when Sarah Shourd, 32, and her two companions Shane Bauer and Joshua Fattal were hiking in Iraq near the border of Iran, they were charged with espionage and illegally entering Iran. The three Americans were held for 14 months at Tehran’s Evin Prison. Shourd was finally released today on $500,000 bail. Her lawyer, Masoud Shafii, said that she left by plane for the Arabian Peninsula kingdom of Oman, where she would be reunited with her mother.
“I’ve hoped and prayed for this moment for 410 days, and I cannot wait to wrap Sarah in my arms and hold her close when we are finally together again,” Shourd’s mother Nora said. “Sarah has had a long and difficult detainment and I am going to make sure that she now gets the care and attention she needs and the time and space to recover.”
The two other men are still in captivity with no future plans of release.
