It’s easy to plant trees…

By Dan Estabrook – September 18, 2008

At GreenDimes, we talk a lot about tree planting.  We aren’t the only ones.  I recently heard from an online company, iChapters, that is donating one tree for each person that becomes a friend of their Facebook page.  To activate a tree planting, they have asked that you join their page by Monday, September 22.

iChapters is a great way to save money on your textbooks, and it’s also a great way to save trees by buying digital eBooks and eChapters.  During iChapter’s last Plant a Tree Drive, the company planted more than 57,000 trees.  In this go around, the company hopes to plant 100,000 trees!

iChapters is partnering with Trees for the Future, one of our great tree-planting partners at GreenDimes.

The idea of downloading books and textbooks digitally intrigues me.  Not only is it eco friendly, I remember carrying around lots of heavy textbooks in college. Nothing short of Ben Gay helped me relieve my sore shoulders.  With some of the cool electronic readers available now, perhaps electronic books is a more viable alternative to traditional books.

The company tells me that the goal is to highlight the fact that buying digital textbooks in the form of eBooks and eChapters from their site is a great way to protect the environment by keeping trees out of paper mills.  Electronic textbooks also offer great savings for students.

I do know that there is something soothing about holding a book in my hands and reading.  But, it is the changing of habits that we must embrace to do our best to go green.

While you are on Facebook getting your tree planted, be sure to stop at Tonic’s Facebook page and become our friend!  We will keep you apprised of company updates and news on our page — and it is a cool place to hang out.  See you there!
