Jacking Shirts

The girls at AICT Tanners High School can stop “Sitting, Waiting, Wishing” for some new clothes. Singer-surfer Jack Johnson, who will release his live “En Concert” album and film in October, provided them with new T-shirts recently that have become their “Jack Johnson uniforms.” The new threads can be seen in the photo to the right.

Says the singer on his website, “AICT Tanners High School is an all girl boarding school that is trying to encourage female education in Tanzania. This small village happens to have one of Tanzania’s few, widely scattered public schools. Kids from long distances are sent there for their only chance at an education. They must move to Pahi and find someone to take them in. The Tanner Family along with the Grounds family helped to build a dorm for 60 girls. Today 230 girls live there at no charge.”

Johnson, a former pro surfer, has had several acoustic-based hits over the years, including the chart-topping Curious George soundtrack. He’s also long been one of the most environmentally friendly artists, promoting organizations like Earth911. In fact, TreeHugger.com named him the Best Musician Under 50 earlier this year in their Best of Green honors.
