I’m part of the media, and that’s one of the reasons I love Jon Stewart. Through the years, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, has been one of the sole institutions keeping the media in check. If not for Jon, just imagine all the appalling newscaster moments which would go unappreciated (like when Kyra Phillips compared Shaun White’s tomahawk trick to the missile which started the Iraq war — thanks Lauren Le Vine for that priceless tip!). Whenever I see something ridiculous on one of the major news networks, I like to think Jon Stewart is right next to me, watching it and laughing as hard as I am — it’s an uncomfortable laughter which attempts to relieve the deep inner shame and embarrassment we feel for our industry.
And so, for today’s Smile File, I bring you this: Jon Stewart mocking Rick Sanchez’s shockingly inaccurate coverage of the Chiliean earthquake and ensuing tsunami panic. It goes from pointing out that Hawaii is not in the Galapagos Islands to comparing him to a coked-up party guest aggressively explaining how cool ants are.
(And we agree. Ants are cool.)
