Do Blondes Have More Soul?

Katharine McPhee has found a new groove.

The “American Idol” contestant released a pop album in early ’07, but she’s trying out a new path for her second album, “Unbroken.” The singer-actress recently switched to famed record label Verve — home to Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday and Diana Krall — for something a bit more soulful, jazzy and edgy.

“Unbroken” comes out Jan. 5, but her lead single “Had It All” just debuted on Yahoo Music, MySpace and other media sites. Paris-born Cyril Guyot, who’s helmed commercials for Prada and Christian Dior, directed the music video.

McPhee co-wrote six of the album tracks, which also included contributions from Kara DioGuardi, David Hodges, Mitch Allan, Rachael Yamagata, Paula Cole, Chris Thompkins and Ingrid Michaelson, among others. John Alagia (John Mayer, Jason Mraz) produced the new disc.

Fans previously heard the “Unbroken” track “Say Goodbye” on “CSI: New York” last year when McPhee had a co-starring role on one of the hit show’s episodes. For more information on McPhee and her new music, check out her MySpace page here.
