Katy Perry Gives Props To Teenage Hero, Cries Onstage

katy.jpgKaty Perry got all choked up over the weekend at the inaugural BBC Radio 1 Teen Radio Awards in London, which unlike our American Teen Awards (which doles out prizes to young celebs) celebrates the achievements of teenagers in the UK.

Perry presented the “Teen Hero” award to Connor Rowntree, a teen who has undergone almost one hundred operations to deal with the severe burns he received in an accident, and now fronts a fire safety campaign.

According to London’s Daily Mail, Katy started to cry as she took to the stage to sing her latest single “Firework” saying, “I’m allowed to be emotional. Thank you so much for supporting me in this song because it means so much to me.”

The “Teen Community Hero” award went to Alex Williams, 17, who lost the use of his legs when he got meningitis at the age of seven and is now a sports ambassador and a wheelchair basketball player with Olympic aspirations, according to the Associated Press.

Jack Bennett, a 16-year-old from Maidenhead, was named “Teen Entrepreneur” for creating a free-range chicken farm for his local community.

So many amazing kids in one room, no wonder Katy cracked a little. We would have been waterworks central, too.
