Voodoo Art

The Voodoo Experience returns to the Big Easy on Halloween weekend, but this year the music festival has teamed up with the Life Is Art Foundation / KK Projects to create installations in the gorgeous City Park venue. Nearly two dozen local and international artists will be involved in crafting large, site-specific pieces that utilize the existing landscapes. Themes include “Natural Order,” “Louisiana Wetlands” and “Homage to an Unseen Intelligence.”

“All of the Voodoo installations will represent the betterment of humanity and the intelligent use of the earth’s resources through a sustainable collaboration with nature,” says Life Is Art Foundation’s Kirsha Kaechele.

“We look at the festival’s production as being a work of art, so this feels like a natural extension,” adds Voodoo founder and producer Stephen Rehage. “With the city’s art community flourishing, this seemed like a good time for Voodoo to honor another aspect of New Orleans’ culture in an interactive way.”

Installations include the giant 30-person Hammock Mother woven by indigenous an Amazonian tribe and the working 30-foot analemmatic sundial demonstrating the connection between the sun and time. Click here for information on the artists and other installations.

Artists performing at this year’s Voodoo Experience include Eminem, KISS, Jane’s Addiction and Widespread Panic. The Life Is Art Foundation, which hosts local exhibits in six previously abandoned structures in the St. Roch neighborhood, uses the arts to promote creativity and a greater social ecosystem.
