If you’ve ever found yourself thinking, “Gosh, Mom, what on earth would possess you to say that?” (and let’s face it, we’ve all been there), make sure to write it down. You could be sitting on a gold mine.
Writing down funny parental statements is exactly how one man earned viral celebrity and even landed a book deal. As the LA Times reported yesterday, Justin Halpern, a 28-year old California native who recently moved back in with his parents in San Diego, started the Twitter page “Shit My Dad Says” about a month ago at the insistence of his friends. In a few short weeks, the site’s become an Internet phenomenon, attracting thousands of followers and earning Halpern numerous offers from literary agents.
Once you check out his Twitter page, you’ll see why it quickly became so popular — it’s absolutely hilarious. The site chronicles funny statements made by Halpern’s father, 73-year-old Sam. Entry after entry captures the zany humor of Halpern’s grumpy ’ole dad, whose withering statements spare no one: ”Your mother rented this film, What Happens in Vegas. I thought it was going to be non-fiction, but it’s fiction, and it’s about some idiot.”
Halpern says he’s been writing down his father’s remarks since childhood, so we’re guessing “Shit My Dad Says,” which is updated daily, could on for years.
