Want to Fly By Yourself? How Does a Jet Pack Sound?

One of the most popular visions is the flight dream. I know it’s one of my favorites. Even though asleep, I can recall the feeling of floating above the ground and lifting into the sky, and, suffice it to say, it’s pretty darn cool. Now there’s a company in New Zealand that wants to give everyone the chance at that feeling, assuming everyone has a bit more than $75,000 of disposable income.

According to the UK’s Metro, Glenn Martin of Martin Aircraft has “a 200 horsepower engine capable of taking a pilot to 60 mph, a height of 2,400 metres [sic] and a distance of 30 miles in 30 minutes on a full tank of fuel.” And the jet pack is apparently light enough (a little more than 250 lbs.) that a person wouldn’t need to get a pilot’s license to use it.

Martin Aircraft’s Richard Lauder, the company’s chief executive, wants to make 500 of these rocket packs a year. And the nice thing is that he’s envisioning it being used for the right reason. As he’s quoted in the article, “This could be life-saving stuff. For us this is an excellent commercial step.”

But if you think there won’t be millionaires lining up to snap one of these babies up, think again.
