Meet Kushal Chakrabarti, Ultimate Philanthropy Game Changer

ChakrabartiThe Huffington Post requested reader feedback to pick 100 “game changers” who are putting digital media to use in changing the world. The HuffPost pared their selections down to the top 10 in each of 10 categories, including entertainment, sports, green and politics. HuffPost then asked readers to vote on the “Ultimate Game Changer” in each category, and received 1.7 million reader responses.

The list is impressive, with the founder of Netflix taking the entertainment category and Sue Gardner, head of Wikimedia Foundaiton, topping the media section.

Of special interest to us here at Tonic is the fact that the inimitable Kushal Chakrabarti, co-founder of the person-to-person micro-lending Web site Vittana, has snapped up the title for philanthropy.

Chakrabarti is indeed a do-gooder to write home about. As the HuffPost describes his contribution, “Realizing that education is the quickest route out of poverty, and that the working poor can’t borrow their way to upward mobility, Chakrabarti founded Vittana (along with colleague Brett Witt), which aims to make it easier for poor families to send their children to school.”

Now that’s an Ultimate Game Changer if I ever heard of one. Which I hadn’t until now. But still. Give the dude a round of applause.
